This was my first painting using Sai! Originally drawn on December 27th, 2011. This marks the final piece of the redraw series 2008 - 2011!

The idea itself isn't bad, the technique lacks, though. I like the colors you picked, but there are some anatomy bits that stand out as underworked - especially the nose. The lips look a little skewed as well.
The brush you used to make the eyelashes and the hair strands is too thin and too crisp - they look a little like something drawn by a pencil over a painting. Even if hair is made out of separate lines in real life, on a picture something drawn with just lines will look flat. I'd suggest trying a different technique while painting hair - for example starting with a big dark brush, then forming areas of light and shadow with a tad smaller brush, then deeper shadows with an even smaller brush and then highlights with a sequence of smaller and smaller brushes. As for the eyelashes, human eyelashes are actually pretty thick and not as crowded, you can freely use a thicker brush and form thick lines that end with a point instead of wispy lines you used.
What's good about this picture is actually the emotions - you conveyed surprise and fear quite well. I hope you will continue to paint and improve.
